Hymenoplasty – Reconstruction of the Hymen
Hymenoplasty involves repairing and reconstructing the hymen, or the thin, elastic membrane which typically covers part of the vaginal opening. The hymen usually tears and can bleed with a woman’s first sexual encounter, as well as with the insertion of a tampon or exercise such as cycling. Repair of the hymen is performed most commonly for religious or cultural reasons. It is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia and sedation.
